Longhorns RL

About Longhorns

The Longhorns are one of the most successful and enduring clubs in the history of domestic rugby league in Ireland. First entering national competition under the name Athboy Longhorns, the club later competed as Longhorns, representing a continuation of the same organisation rather than a separate entity.

Across multiple domestic eras and competition formats, the Longhorns established themselves as a consistent and competitive presence. Most notably, the club has won five senior domestic championships, placing them among the most decorated clubs in Irish rugby league history. These titles were achieved during periods of significant structural change within the domestic game, underlining the club’s ability to adapt and remain competitive.

The Longhorns’ record is particularly significant given the wider context of Irish rugby league, which has often been marked by short-lived clubs and fluctuating league structures. While many teams emerged for only brief periods, the Longhorns maintained continuity, regularly fielding teams and contributing to the stability of domestic competition.

Beyond on-field success, the club’s importance lies in its longevity and reliability. Through sustained participation, championship success, and survival across multiple phases of the domestic game, the Longhorns have secured a lasting place in the recorded history of rugby league in Ireland.
